Target Audience
This educational activity will be of value to primary care physicians, psychiatrists, neurologists, as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are involved in providing care to patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias.
Learning Objectives
Following this activity, participants should be better able to
- Outline the current and projected epidemiologic and financial impact of AD and related dementias in the United States
- Review effective techniques for diagnosing AD and differentiate AD from other conditions that cause dementia
- Evaluate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for dementia and dementia-related neuropsychiatric symptoms
- Discuss the advances in imaging, biomarkers, and other techniques to improve the diagnosis and monitoring of dementia
- Describe the current understanding of the pathophysiology of AD and other geriatric syndromes and discuss how this affects the development of new therapeutic options
- Identify the currently recognized risk factors for dementia and ongoing research efforts for dementia prevention
- Appropriately incorporate what they have learned into the care of patients
