David S. Geldmacher, MD, is Director of the Memory Disorders Program and Associate Professor of
Neurology at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Dr Geldmacher earned his MD with a certificate in academic research at the State University
of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse College of Medicine. He served his internship
at Mt. Sinai Medical Center and completed a residency in neurology at Case Western Reserve
University School of Medicine, both in Cleveland. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in
behavioral neurology from the Center for Neuropsychological Studies at the University of
Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville.
Dr Geldmacher is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Additionally, he has been a
principal investigator in several research projects on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
Dr Geldmacher serves on several national educational and advisory boards, including the
Scientific Advisory Board for the Institute for the Study of Aging in New York. His committee
activities have included the Steering Committee for the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer’s
Disease Cooperative Study. He also serves as the Geriatric Neurology Section Liaison for the
Medical Economics Management Subcommittee for the American Academy of Neurology.
Dr Geldmacher has served as a scientific grant reviewer as well as a journal and book reviewer
for a variety of journals, including Neurology, Alzheimer’s Disease and Associated Disorders,
the Annals of Neurology, Lancet, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. He has
authored or coauthored dozens of journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts on
dementia-related topics and is the author of a clinical handbook entitled Contemporary
Diagnosis and Management of Alzheimer’s Disease. In addition, he has lectured widely here
and internationally on AD and dementia. Dr. Geldmacher’s professional and medical society
memberships include the American Academy of Neurology, American Society of Neurorehabilitation,
and the Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology Society.
