Gary W. Small, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and Parlow-Solomon Professor on Aging at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he is also an Attending Psychiatrist at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital. In addition, Dr Small is Founding Director of the UCLA Memory Clinic. He is also Director of the Memory and Aging Research Center at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, Director of the Imaging Core at the UCLA Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and Director of the UCLA Center on Aging. Dr Small earned his medical degree at the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles. He served as an intern in internal medicine at the Children's Hospital and Adult Medical Center in San Francisco, California. He then completed a residency in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was appointed Chief Resident of the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service, and completed a clinical fellowship in psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School, both in Boston. Dr Small then became a fellow in geriatric psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr Small is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Jack Weinberg Award from the American Psychiatric Association and the Senior Investigator Award from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. Scientific American named him one of the world's top 50 innovators in science and technology. He has been an investigator or principal investigator on more than 40 research projects on dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Dr Small serves on the editorial boards of several journals and newsletters including the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry and Geriatric Times. He is a reviewer for numerous publications including Neurology, the New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr Small has authored or co-authored more than 500 journal articles, book reviews, letters, editorials, books, book chapters, and abstracts on dementia-related topics. Dr Small is a member of professional organizations including the American College of Psychiatrists, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, and American Psychiatric Association (fellow).
