Daniel C. Marson, JD, PhD, is Professor of Neurology and Associate Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He also directs the Division of Neuropsychology within the UAB Department of Neurology.
Dr Marson is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Carleton College. He completed his JD degree at the University of Chicago Law School and previously practiced and taught law in private and governmental settings. He is a member of the Illinois and Alabama state bars. Dr Marson subsequently completed his PhD in clinical psychology at Northwestern University The Feinberg School of Medicine, his internship at Westside Veterans Administration Medical Center in Chicago, and specialized in geropsychology and neuropsychology.
Dr Marson has worked as principal investigator on a number of research studies investigating loss of competency and higher order functional abilities in neurologic and psychiatric disorders. He has lectured nationally and internationally regarding medical-legal and ethical issues in dementia. Dr Marson is Chair of the Internal Ethics Committee of the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study, an NIA-funded Alzheimer’s drug trial research consortium, and serves on the DSMB/OSMB of the Womens’ Health Initiative study funded by the NIH. He is a member of the Conflict of Interest Committee of the National Academy of Neuropsychology.
Dr Marson has authored more than 100 articles, chapters, letters, and abstracts his topics of interest and is an ad hoc reviewer for several publications, including Neurology and the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. He has also authored and copyrighted several instruments for the assessment of competency.
