Richard Schulz, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the University Center for
Social and Urban Research, Director of Gerontology, and Associate Director of the
Institute on Aging, all at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. Dr Schulz also
serves as Director of the Geriatric Education Center of Pennsylvania.
Dr Schulz earned his PhD in social psychology from Duke University. He is the recipient
of several honors, including the Kleemeier Award for Research on Aging from the Gerontological
Society of America, the Developmental Health Award for Research on Health in Later Life from
the American Psychological Association, and the Fulbright Fellowship from Dartmouth College.
Dr Schulz is the author of numerous papers, abstracts, and books. His work on caregiving has
appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association,
and the Archives of Internal Medicine, among others. Dr Schulz is also a member of several
professional and scientific societies, including the American Association of Geriatric
Psychiatry, the American Geriatric Society, the Gerontological Society of America, and the
Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research.
Dr Schulz’s work has focused on the social-psychological aspects of aging, including the impact
of disabling late life disease on patients and their families. He is principal investigator on
numerous NIH supported studies including a 10-year, multi-site, longitudinal study investigating
the health effects of caregiving among married couples, funded by the National Institute of
Mental Health.
