P. Murali Doraiswamy, MD, is Chief of the Division of Biological Psychiatry, Department of
Psychiatry, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He received his
medical degree from the University of Madras in India, graduating first in his class. He
completed his psychiatry residency at Duke University Medical Center, during which he was
selected for the NIMH Outstanding Resident Award, the NCDEU New Investigator Award, ASCP
Marion Merrill Dow Award, and the ACNP Mead Johnson Award. He then joined the faculty at
Duke where he served as Director of Psychiatry Clinical Trials for 6 years and as Director
of Psychiatry Continuing Medical Education for 3 years. Dr Doraiswamy has also served on
the Duke Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for the past 7 years. He has been the lead
physician on numerous psychiatric clinical drug trials or research studies.
Dr Doraiswamy has lectured in several countries and received many awards for his clinical
research including the Paul Beeson Physician Scholar Award and Novartis Clinical Scholar
Award. He has delivered the Dorothy Dillon Eweson Lecture and the Paul Tabalowsky Lecture.
Dr Doraiswamy has served on national advisory panels or review committees for numerous
organizations such as the NIH, FDA, and several pharmaceutical companies. He served on the
National Scientific Advisory Committee for the American Federation for Aging Research.
He serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals and has authored more than 300
research abstracts and 150 scientific articles in journals such as JAMA, Lancet, Neurology,
American Journal of Psychiatry, and Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
Dr Doraiswamy's research has also been featured on many radio, print, and television programs.
