Steven G. Potkin, MD, is Robert R. Sprague Director of the Brain Imaging Center at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Dr Potkin is also Professor, Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at UCI. In addition, he is Senior Research Scientist at the Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California. Dr Potkin earned his medical degree at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was also awarded a summer fellowship in rehabilitation medicine. He performed a psychiatry residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, where he was appointed Chief Resident, and then completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Departments of Psychology, Sociology, and Gerontology.

Dr Potkin is the recipient of several awards and honors, including the Annual Exemplary Psychiatry Award given by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. He has been an investigator on numerous dementia-related research projects and has written more than 300 related articles, chapters, books, posters, and abstracts.

Dr Potkin is a reviewer for several prominent publications including Dementia Today, American Journal of Psychiatry, Archives of General Psychiatry, and the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology and has given more than 375 presentations nationally and internationally. Dr Potkin is a member of many professional and scholarly organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association and is a founding member of the International College of Geriatric Psychopharmacology. Dr Potkin is also a member of several advisory boards, committees, and task forces, and is listed in Best Doctors in America.
