Richard J. Ham, MD, is Director of the West Virginia University Center on Aging and Professor of Geriatric Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown. Previously, Dr Ham was Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center of Central New York and held the SUNY Distinguished Chair in Geriatric Medicine at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, where he was Professor of Medicine and of Family Medicine.

Dr Ham earned his MBBS at University College Hospital School of Medicine, University of London, England in 1969, and an MD at the State University of New York at Syracuse. He completed the equivalent of an American internship at St. Mary's Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight, Britain. Dr Ham then completed a 3-year program (equivalent to a 3-year family practice residency in the United States), and 1 fellowship year in geriatrics and psychogeriatrics, at the Isle of Wight Group Hospitals, UK.

Dr Ham is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Milo Leavitt Award for contributions to geriatric education from the American Geriatrics Society. He has been involved in many dementia- and Alzheimer's-related research and educational projects and has lectured internationally on dementia and on geriatrics. Dr Ham has authored and co-authored textbooks, journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and editorials on geriatric-related topics. His professional affiliations include the American Geriatrics Society, of which he is a past President and a Fellow; Fellowship in the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Gerontological Society of America; and membership in the International Psychogeriatric Association. His most recent text is the 4th edition of Primary Care Geriatrics: A Case-Based Approach (Mosby, Inc., 2001).

Dr Ham has indicated that he will include reference to off-label/unapproved uses of drugs or devices in his presentation. He will discuss the use of Acetylchoinesterase inhibitors in moderate to mild cognitive impairment and in non-AD dementias.
